Student Activities

After School Clubs and Activities

The Shady Grove Home & School Association partners with reputable club organizers to provide after school extra-curricular activities for our students.  We offer three sessions (fall, winter and spring) and have a wide variety of clubs to meet varying interests.  Registration information is printed and sent home for each session, as well as published in our weekly school e-newsletter during the registration window.  Two scholarships are available for every club each session.

Visit the Home and School Association page for details

Reading Olympics

The goal of the Reading Olympics is to increase students' reading for enjoyment. Students collaborate with their teammates to read forty to fifty books that have been selected by a committee of librarians, reading specialists and classroom teachers. These professionals read the books and write questions which teams of students answer during the competition. The Olympics are primarily a celebration of reading rather than a contest. All participants are awarded ribbons. Since the teams generate much excitement about this event, the experience is rewarding for everyone involved.

PBIS Ambassadors – Fifth Grade

Fifth grade students have the opportunity to serve as PBIS Ambassadors, helping to lead and support initiatives that promote respect, responsibility, and safety throughout our school. Their voices and actions inspire others and contribute to a positive, inclusive, and welcoming environment for all. This year, their leadership will also support our No Place for Hate efforts, making their impact even more meaningful and lasting.

Fourth & Fifth Grade Chorus

Students in grades four and five are invited to join the school chorus. Rehearsals are held before school from 7:45 to 8:30 AM. The chorus performs in both a winter concert and a spring musical, giving students the chance to showcase their talents and grow as performers.

Instrumental Music – Band & Strings

Our instrumental music program offers small group instruction in woodwind, brass, percussion, and string instruments. Lessons are scheduled on a rotating basis to minimize disruption to core instruction. Students develop skills in note reading, rhythm, and tone production. Band and strings students perform in winter and spring concerts, along with other performance opportunities throughout the year.

Student Council – Fifth Grade

The Student Council provides fifth grade students with a platform to organize events and advocate for the needs of their school community. Meetings are held during lunch and are facilitated by Ms. Flavin and Ms. Groody. Through their leadership, students learn the value of service, collaboration, and civic engagement.

Safeties

Safeties monitor hallways, escort our kindergarten students, help teachers in the bus rooms and at parent pick-up and assist students and the bus drivers with making sure our students stay safe. We are proud of our Shady Grove Safeties.
